Senate abortion bill withstands seven unfriendly amendments

And to think we’re supposed to have separation of the church and state. This is really just republicans trying to prevent people from accessing a safe procedure. Many people don’t have cars, yet if they’re 30 miles away or something like that they have to wait another day? There’s absolutely no reason I see to even want to pass a bill like this. I understand if an abortion clinic adopted a policy like this or strongly recommended it, but for the government to even try to restrict the rights a woman has to her body even more is ridiculous

Post On Politics

A Republican-backed abortion bill in the Senate that requires women to wait 24-hour after meeting face-to-face with her doctor before going through with the procedure withstood challenges from seven amendments from Democrats and is now poised for a final vote.

Among the challenges raised in the amendments: a 24-hour reflection period for men seeking vasectomies; conducting the meeting via telephone or internet and allowing women who live more than 100 miles from a clinic or who sign a document saying they have thoroughly considered their decision to waive the waiting period.

Democrat Sen. Maria Sachs, of Delray Beach, proposed allowing midwives and nurses – in addition to doctors – to meet personally with women 24 hours before the procedure. Democrat Jeff Clemens, of Lake Worth, sought to eliminate a provision of the bill that requires victims of rape and incest to provide a police report or medical records to be exempt…

The line between protesters and extreme activists

The wage between pro-life and pro-choice has been a popular subject for controversial debate since abortion was legalised over 50 years ago. The pro-life movement (also known as the right-to-life movement), is a social and political campaign which began in the late 1960’s in the United States and since then it has slowly begun to invade Britain.

Recent stories in the media tell us about the impulsive lengths anti-abortion activists will go to in order to voice their opinion. These demonstrations continue to become more violent, with The Independent (Taylor, 2015) reporting that protesters in the UK are being trained by those who are involved with the pro-life movement organisation in the US.

In 2010 The Guardian released a headline that read “US-style anti-abortion protesters target clinics in Britain” (Magolis, 2010) with the article stating that these protesters are copying the aggressive tactics which are used by US activists.

Just Because

Just because her skirt is short

Doesn’t mean she’s a whore,

Doesn’t mean she’s easy,

And doesn’t mean she was asking for it.

Just because she cursed

Doesn’t mean she’s indecent,

Doesn’t mean she’s “unladylike”,

And doesn’t mean she has less of a right to speech than men.

Just because she told a guy no,

Doesn’t mean she lead him on,

Doesn’t mean she’s a prude,

And doesn’t mean she’s a bitch.

Just because she was born with the “wrong” genitals she shouldn’t treated as less than human.

Is she not a victim of a horrendous crime, because her outfit?

Should she be judged harsher than men for what she said, because a “lady” shouldn’t speak like that?

Should she be shunned for her right to say yes or no?

We are not born as second class citizens, yet from birth men and women are internalized with misogyny.

Every Night

Every night I lay in an empty bed,

Feeling restless with thoughts consuming me.

I think of the women who lost children

In wars they didn’t know they were fighting.

They didn’t know of the horrors they’d face,

Until the loathsome day stole them away.

Children in their school were slaughtered like pigs.

A hundred and thirty-two kids were killed

Because radicals don’t want girls to learn.

Every night I lay in an empty bed,

Feeling restless with thoughts consuming me.

I think of the many victims of rape.

“Men can’t get raped, they’d like it far too much.

Plus it’s not like girls overpower them.”

Don’t you know one in ten victims are men?!

“You saw her shirt. She was asking for it.”

No one asks to be a victim of rape.

Men aren’t sharks who attack when seeing blood,

They are simply humans with a conscious.

Surely they can understand no means no.

Every night I lay in an empty bed,

Feeling restless with thoughts consuming me.

I know this world is far beyond broken;

I see it crumbling right in front of me.

I wish to change it so desperately,

But I am just a girl who thinks too much

I’m lost, dazed and not knowing what to do

Every night I lay in an empty bed,

Feeling restless with thoughts consuming me.

Black girls are ugly

Honestly I think that this is not far beyond tragic. I’ve seen so many men and women say things like “She’s pretty, for a black girl.” or insult women of color whenever they get upset and try to voice it by saying they’re “ratchet” for trying to get their voice heard. Personally, I don’t find black people as someone I’d date because I don’t have physical attraction to them. As you said, we’re all allowed to have our own preferences. Some girls like tall guys, some guys like girls with blonde hair that are petite. There’s no problem with someone liking or not liking size 12s or size 2s.
Saying things that demote others because of their looks is a problem, and as always you’ve done a great job at addressing this.

The Inspiration of a Phenomenal Lady

While at work, a co-worker stated his dating preferences were White and Hispanic women. That didn’t bother me, everyone has preferences and are entitled to them. However, he continued to say that Black women were flat out ugly. He didn’t say he wasn’t attracted to them, however they are ugly. It took me by surprise because he was black himself. He was basically calling his mother, sister, grandmother, female cousins, and his black female friends ugly. It truly hurt my feelings, which inspired me to write a letter to the black men like my co-worker.

Dear black men,

I am not angry, bitter, or filled with hate. This is simply a letter of sorrow.
You’ve continuously asked why we’re so spiteful and miserable. You’ve asked why we never wear our natural hair, nails, and eyelashes. You’ve labeled us as “ratchet”, and even went as far as saying the only good thing about us was…

Are we ever truly alone?

Maybe you don’t see it this way, but you’re bashing people who suffer mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, even people who are just going through a tough time. There’s scientific evidence proving that these are real disorders. Just look at FMRIs of people with severe depression versus someone who has an average mindset when it comes to their mood.
When people are screaming out for help, that’s what they need. They’re not just being annoying attention seekers, they’re people who are suffering. I’m sure you don’t mean to invalidate their pain, but you should really try to keep an open mind.
You might not be alone in a room full of family and friends, but you can feel an emptiness and you can feel alone. Especially if no one cares about the times you’ve called out for help.
It’s not being self absorbed or selfish, you should understand that no one consciously chooses to be miserable. Nobody chooses to break down and hate living their lives.
I can understand arguing that it’s a choice to an extent, after all they have to make the choice to recover. But, nearly 10% of people suffer from depression alone every year. 15 million Americans suffer from social anxiety.
Odds are you have lots of people you know who have suffered from one of those, and you think they’re the sweetest or coolest people you know.
Attitudes like this keep these wonderful people in pain, most people go untreated over the fear of being judged. Attitudes like this make people feel truly alone.

Here’s some sources you should check out to become more aware of how big of an issue these disorders are.

The Wasted Youth

I do not permit self pity ever. I don’t care what your situation is, I don’t believe in excuses and what is the point of wasting your time and my time. I’ve noticed that the most prevalent version of self pity is now declaring loneliness, especially in the younger generation. Some people say they do this just for attention and just to have someone to say “oh no your not alone, you have me”. Which of course is attention seeking but even if their only motive was to get attention these people all have the same reason for doing so. They have enough self pity to publicly showcase it. But are we ever truly alone or are we just wallowing. Wallowing in our own deficiencies and screw- ups. But what does that do, make you feel even more depressed and alone. So why even go there in the first place…
